The Automated Electric Motor Dynamometer (AEMD) is aimed to facilitate designing a device by measuring real-time motor performance and display multiple characteristics such as torque, speed and efficiency across a broad spectrum of motor, drive, and feedback sensor configurations. On a broader level, the AEMD will be integrated into the R&D of Wave Energy Converters (WECs), which are an integral part of harnessing the ocean’s energy potential to transition our world into a greener, sustainable future and help AquaHarmonics with the ongoing efforts in the Wave Energy Industry. The AEMD utilizes MATLAB, Simulink, and Simulink Real-Time to configure the motor testing and collect data that is published into a Dynamometer Post Report PDF file. Communication protocols such as EtherCAT and CANopen were used to establish proper motor communication with drives and relevant software. As a result of this project, the AEMD is able to test electric motors through user-defined motor tests that configure RPM and torque to determine overall motor efficiency and other pertinent motor characteristics to compare with manufacturer's datasheet for complete motor validity.
