Electrical Steering System for a Human Powered Submarine
2026

Our group created an electrical steering system that is fully battery-powered for a human-driven submarine. The Human Powered Submarine Club (HPSC) plans to use our design to compete in the future, as our system is easily accessible via the use of a joystick and DC stepper motors. A few system-level accomplishments were the waterproofing of our controller/entire enclosure, which contains relevant electrical components and a user-accessible joystick, a battery-powered system, and the integration of accurate degree/DC step response on our rudder/dive plane system. A few challenges for our group were the resizing of our enclosure to ensure our components fit/were able to operate properly, testing our waterproof implementation, and ensuring that our system's battery-powered power supply worked/works adequately without overheating any key components. For the future, a useful addition to our system would be a kill switch, which instantly disconnects power from our system in the event of an emergency.
