Group 06 Proximity Sensing Unit

Our project is designed to monitor the presence of an object and enforce a countdown period. The intended use of the system is to ensure that an object, such as a phone or tool, remains in place for a specified duration. If the object is removed before the timer expires, the system detects the change and activates an audible alarm to notify the user. The system integrates several key technologies to achieve this functionality. An ESP32 microcontroller acts as the central controller and coordinates communication between subsystems. A VL53L0X time-of-flight distance sensor detects whether an object is present near the timer. User input is provided through a potentiometer that allows the timer duration to be adjusted between 1 and 15 minutes. The remaining countdown time is displayed on the system display, while an audible alarm circuit generates a 440 Hz tone when the object is removed or when the timer state changes. One of the most notable accomplishments of this project was successfully integrating multiple hardware modules including the microcontroller, sensor, and display into a cohesive system that met strict engineering requirements for timing accuracy and detection response. A significant challenge occurred during development when the original Nokia LCD proved difficult to integrate, requiring our team to redesign the display interface using the FPGA board display. Future improvements could include implementing other notifications, expanding the timer range, or improving the user interface with additional controls.
