A system that operates inside of an irrigation canal to measure the flow rate of water through that canal, and the height of the water in the canal to determine the volume of water that has flowed in a given time period. The height of the water is measured using an ultrasonic sensor. The velocity of the water is measured using a propellor-type Hall Effect sensor. The system is solar-powered and transmits information over 4G so irrigation system operators can monitor water usage in real time. The system also operates off of a solar charged battery, so it can operate in remote locations without being connected to any power. The challenges we were able to overcome with this project were designing the system on a small budget of $500. The system was also required to be rugged, waterproof, and capable of being transported and operating in harsh desert conditions.
